What We Do

GCE brings Johns Hopkins' resources to our communities.

As Maryland's largest private employer and an anchor institution in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins has the power to shape policy, create opportunities, and strengthen neighborhoods.

GCE ensures that Johns Hopkins’ resources reach the people and places that need them most in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Florida.

From helping entrepreneurs start their dream businesses to connecting thousands with essential resources—each partnership we build and program we launch is designed to create lasting, meaningful change in the communities we serve.

Our Focus Areas

Government Relations

We champion policies that benefit our community, from healthcare access to education.

We serve as a liaison between Johns Hopkins and the government at all levels, focusing on key regions, including Maryland, Baltimore City, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Florida. Our team works to develop and advocate for policies supporting education, healthcare, research, and community development.

We oversee government relations and manage relationships with various stakeholders, including faith-based organizations, businesses, communities, philanthropic partners, trade associations, and advocacy groups.

Community Engagement

We're on the ground, working directly with our neighbors. Whether organizing health clinics or supporting local events, we strengthen our community from within.

As Johns Hopkins' community engagement arm, we work alongside trusted community organizations to strengthen neighborhoods around our campuses. Through these strategic partnerships, we address critical issues in health, housing, economic development, transportation, and safety.

The programs we support are guided by community voices and needs and positively impact our neighborhoods.

Economic Partnerships

We drive economic growth and create opportunities in Maryland and Washington, D.C. through programs that support small businesses, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs.

Through HopkinsLocal, we connect locally owned businesses with construction opportunities, hire from our neighborhoods, and invest in strategic purchasing. The BUILD college program offers tools, networking opportunities, and access to industry experts to assist small businesses in the design and construction industry.

We also support entrepreneurs through programs like Ward Infinity and Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses.
