Community Benefit Report

Every initiative tells a story of impact.

The Community Benefit Report (CBR) provides a comprehensive overview of Johns Hopkins Hospital's ongoing commitment to our community. It catalogs our current services and programs and guides future initiatives by identifying areas of unmet need.

As a nonprofit hospital, Johns Hopkins is required by the Internal Revenue Service to demonstrate the value we provide through community benefit activities. The Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) mandates that all Maryland hospitals submit this information annually. These reports contribute to a publicly available statewide Community Benefit Report, ensuring transparency and accountability in our community-focused efforts.

Turning Insights into Action

By carefully analyzing these reports, we've been able to identify opportunities and launch initiatives that help our community.

For instance, the JHBMC Community Food Pantry serves employees, patients, and community members with various emergent needs related to social determinants of health. The pantry provides support for situations such as:

  • An employee who suffered a house fire and was unable to afford food
  • Newly discharged patients who did not have the means to stock their pantry
  • Unexpected bills or expenses that reduced funds available for food
  • Mental health conditions that impacted proper management of food resources

The success of the JHBMC Community Food Pantry in addressing these types of needs has led to its continued operation and expansion as part of our ongoing community initiatives. This is just one example of how the insights gained from our Community Benefit reporting process can lead to beneficial programs that extend beyond our initial scope.
