Improving Community Health Through Collaboration and Innovation

By combining resources, fostering community partnerships, and listening to the voices of our neighbors, we aim to create lasting positive change in the areas that matter most to our community. Together, we can create a healthier, stronger Baltimore for all.

Nationwide, all nonprofit hospitals are required by the IRS to demonstrate the value they directly provide in community benefit activity. Additionally, the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) requires Maryland hospitals to submit community benefit information annually in order to compile a publicly available, statewide Community Benefit Report (CBR). Current year and previous year CBRs that were submitted by the individual hospitals are available on the HSCRC’s website. Below are the Community Benefit Highlights for FY 2022 and FY 2023 for the six hospitals in the Johns Hopkins Health System.

Innovation Fund for Community Safety

The JHU Innovation Fund for Community Safety is a four-year, $6 million initiative supporting community-led efforts to reduce violence. The first grantees were announced in 2021, and we anticipate the second round of funding will be open for applications in early 2025.

The fund emphasizes local leadership—supporting projects near Johns Hopkins campuses in Mount Vernon, Charles Village, and East Baltimore—with the goal of scaling successful programs citywide. Grants provide financial support, technical assistance, data analysis, and research to help community organizations create impactful, near-term solutions to improve public safety.

Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA)

Every three years, Johns Hopkins surveys its surrounding neighborhoods on their most pressing needs. The Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) evaluates health issues and access to services in the communities surrounding Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center—our Community Benefit Service Area (CBSA).

The CHNA guides our efforts to improve community health. It’s how we identify key health needs and create targeted implementation strategies.

By engaging directly with community members through surveys, focus groups, and multilingual outreach, we ensure our health initiatives align with the community's needs and wants.
